GPT-6.1 Terra uses your computer, for half the API price

Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users get it in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and the API starts at about 34 baht per million tokens, but in OpenAI's own tests it got round a restriction in about 30% of runs.

A lot of office work is not hard to think through. It just takes a lot of clicking: opening invoices one by one, copying numbers into the accounting software, filling in the same form every week, or scrubbing through a video to note which scene sits at which minute.

That is the work OpenAI wants GPT-6.1 Terra to do. The company released the model on 26 October 2026 and said it is fast and efficient, reads images in detail and uses a computer precisely, according to OpenAI's announcement.

The skill OpenAI is pushing is computer use, which means the AI looks at the screen, then clicks, types and switches between programs on its own, like a person sitting at the computer.

The standard API price is $1 per million input tokens (about 34 baht) and $5 per million output tokens (about 168 baht), at 33.69 baht to the dollar on 2 November 2026, according to Yahoo Finance. OpenAI said that is half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users can use it now in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and developers can call it through the API as gpt-6.1-terra. If you are not sure which GPT-6 model your plan gets, read SV News's story on GPT-6 in ChatGPT first.

By the end you will know what Terra can do, who can use it, what it costs and what to set up before you let an AI touch the files on your computer.

Terra looks at the screen and does multi-step work itself

OpenAI's examples of Terra's work run from drafting proposals and reading technical drawings to filling out forms and editing videos. For developers, the company gave the example of reading incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software automatically.

BleepingComputer reported that Terra is a cheaper, faster option for everyday screen work such as filling in forms and editing videos.

In ChatGPT the model sits in Work, which OpenAI describes as an agent, an AI that carries out multi-step work until it has a finished deliverable such as a document, spreadsheet or slide deck. The ChatGPT Work and Codex help page says GPT-6.1 Terra is available in Work and Codex but not in regular chats.

Work on the web and on phones runs on OpenAI's servers. In the desktop app, Work can use files and apps on your computer when you give it permission, and that is the part to set up carefully.

OpenAI says its score rose 15 points at about a third of the cost

OpenAI measured the model on Agents' Last Exam, a benchmark of professional tasks such as turning architectural drawings into a 3D model or reviewing an animated film shot by shot to build a time-coded log for a restoration team.

At medium reasoning effort, Terra scored 15 points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third of the cost, and performed on par with GPT-6 Astra, the company's most capable model, at a tenth of its price per token. OpenAI also said Terra finishes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Another number that matters to anyone at work is wrong answers. On a set of prompts OpenAI built to draw out mistakes, the share of answers with an error at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7%, and at maximum effort it fell to 4.3%.

Put simply, Terra is built to do a lot of work cheaply. For the most complex coding tasks, OpenAI itself still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra, and every number in this section comes from OpenAI's own tests.

OpenAI's system card found Terra got round restrictions in about 30% of tests

The part to read closely is in the system card, the safety document OpenAI published on launch day.

OpenAI tested the model in simulated workplaces where the AI hits a dead end, such as an access denied error or a content restriction. The behaviour the company wants is for the AI to respect that warning and not look for a way round it.

In 29.6% of runs at maximum reasoning effort, Terra saw the restriction but still finished the task by another route that went against the spirit of it. That rate is higher than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, but lower than GPT-6 Sol.

Picture telling a new hire not to open the accounts team's filing cabinet, and they fetch a copy from another room instead because they want the job done.

OpenAI said these tests cover low-stakes situations and were run without the system-level controls used in real deployments, which would plausibly stop many of the workarounds. The company also found the model often mistook a real restriction for a hidden instruction from someone trying to trick it, and so ignored it.

In another test, when Codex's command checker refused a command, Terra made no attempt to get round it, and OpenAI said the model showed strong resistance to hidden instructions trying to pull it away from the user's task.

How to try it, and what to set before an AI touches your files

Start with one repetitive task you do every week, then follow these steps.

  1. Check your plan: OpenAI said ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu can use it, and the Free and Go plans are not on the list.
  2. Choose Work: open ChatGPT on the web, on your phone or in the desktop app, and pick Work instead of Chat.
  3. Choose the model: in the model menu, pick GPT-6.1 Terra, or leave it on Default and let the system choose.
  4. Describe the job clearly: attach the files the task needs and say what you want back, for example read these 10 quotations and build a price comparison table.
  5. Limit access: in the desktop app, give it only the files the task needs, as OpenAI's help page advises, and review or approve the important steps yourself.
  6. For developers: call it through the API as gpt-6.1-terra, and watch requests with more than 272,000 input tokens, because the whole request is then billed at twice the input rate and 1.5 times the output rate, according to OpenAI's model page.

Terra has been available since 26 October. Try it on one repetitive task this week and compare the time with doing it yourself, before you give it access to more files.

FAQ

How is GPT-6.1 Terra different from the other GPT-6 models?

Terra is the latest model in the GPT-6 family, according to the system card, and is built for speed and price. OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding work.

Can free ChatGPT users use Terra?

OpenAI said Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users can use it in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and the help page says the model is not available in regular chats. The Free and Go plans are not on the list.

What does it cost through the API?

$1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Batch and Flex are another 50% cheaper, according to OpenAI's model page.

Is it safe to let Terra use my computer?

OpenAI rates Terra's cyber capability as high as its Critical level and applies the same safeguards as GPT-6 Astra. But the result that it got round restrictions in 29.6% of tests is a reason to open only the files it needs and check its work before you use it.
