On the morning of Friday, 6 November, anyone filling up at a PTT or Bangchak station saw lower numbers on the price board than the day before. Ordinary diesel (B7) fell to 41.79 baht a litre from 42.54 baht, and every benzine and gasohol grade dropped by 1 baht a litre, Bangkok Biz News reported. The prices took effect at 5am and had not changed again by 8 November, according to a check by Thansettakij.

The cut came from a decision by the Oil Fuel Fund Management Committee, known in Thai as Kor Bor Nor, which met on Thursday, 5 November. The Oil Fund is a pot of government money that collects a levy on some fuels and pays a subsidy on others, so that pump prices do not swing too hard with world markets. When the fund moves, the price we pay moves with it. The details of the decision match in both Naewna and Bangkok Biz News.

New prices per litre put diesel at 41.79 baht and gasohol 95 at 39.84 baht

After the cut, PTT and Bangchak, which charge the same for these ordinary fuels, sell diesel B7 at 41.79 baht a litre (was 42.54), gasohol 95 at 39.84 baht (was 40.84), gasohol 91 at 39.47 baht (was 40.47), gasohol E20 at 31.80 baht (was 32.80) and plain benzine at 49.33 baht (was 50.33). The earlier prices come from the table published by Sanook before the change. Diesel B20 and the premium diesel grades did not change this time.

Gasohol is benzine blended with ethanol, which is made from crops such as sugar cane or cassava. The E number says how much is blended in: the higher the number after the E, the cheaper the litre, but the engine has to be built for it. Not every car can take it.

These figures are the standard prices at PTT and Bangchak stations in Bangkok, before the local maintenance tax, so stations in some provinces may charge slightly more, and other brands set their own prices. Check the board at the pump before you fill.

A full tank now saves about 40 to 53 baht

One baht a litre sounds small until you multiply it by the size of the tank. Take a car with a 40-litre tank filled with gasohol 95: it now costs about 1,594 baht, against about 1,634 baht before, a saving of 40 baht every tank. Take a pickup with a 70-litre tank filled with diesel B7: about 2,925 baht now, against about 2,978 baht before, a saving of 52.50 baht. The tank sizes here are assumptions. Look up your own in the car's manual, then multiply the litres by 1 baht (benzine) or 0.75 baht (diesel) to get your own figure.

Someone who fills up once a week saves about 160 baht a month in a car and about 210 baht a month in a pickup. Counting from 3 November, when gasohol 95 was still 41.54 baht according to Bangkok Biz News, the price has fallen by 1.70 baht in total, so a full tank in a car costs about 68 baht less.

The price fell because world oil got cheaper and the Oil Fund adjusted

World oil prices fell fast in the run-up to the decision. On 5 November diesel was about 155 dollars a barrel, down from about 166 dollars the day before, and gasoline was about 105 dollars, down from about 112 dollars. There were four causes: tension in the Middle East eased and fears of a shortage faded, countries around the Persian Gulf exported more crude, investors sold to take profits after the US midterm elections, and the world economy may slow enough to cut demand for oil.

With world prices lower, the committee had room to cut pump prices and, at the same time, to change the per-litre rate the fund collects or pays on each fuel. The fund's subsidy bill had reached about 69 million baht a day. The committee sees the change as helping both the cost of living and the fund's cash position.

But world prices move every day, so the numbers at the pump today could change again next week. Do not plan a month of spending around one day's price.

Which fuel can you use? Check the fuel flap and the manual

Most people fill up with whatever they always use, but the gaps between fuels matter more than this week's cut. The sticker inside the fuel flap or the car's manual tells you which fuels the car can take. A petrol car that normally runs on gasohol 95 can use gasohol 91 only if the manual says so, and it is cheaper by 0.37 baht a litre, which is only about 15 baht a tank for a 40-litre car.

The big gap is E20, 8.04 baht a litre cheaper than gasohol 95, about 322 baht a tank for a 40-litre car. But only cars the maker certifies for E20 can use it. If you do not see that in the manual or on the flap, ask the brand's service centre first and do not experiment. Diesel cars use diesel B7. B20 is much cheaper than B7, but only for vehicles the maker certifies. If you have put in the wrong fuel, do not start the engine: call a mechanic or the service centre.

There are three things you can do today. First, open the fuel flap or the manual and see what your car can take. Second, if the car is built for E20, compare the cost per tank for yourself. Third, before a long trip, check that day's price on the website or app of the station you use, because prices can be adjusted again at any time.

FAQ

When did fuel prices fall?
